Epson RX680 Refurb $99 Epson.com online clearance

Epson RX680 refurb’d $99 (was $200 new)
Epson Clearance RX680 $99
A solid deal, even vs. the RX595 on sale this week at BestBuy new, given that it is a fully featured, double-sided printing capable all-in-one photo printer that will match your local photo lab prints, and has unique features such as Scanning directly to Memory Cards in JPG or PDF format. Their current top-of-the-line photo AIO.
The pluses for those considering this vs. other cheaper AIOs:
+ Good for those that want longevity - 17 years open, 200+ album based on tests. Not bad for a dye-printer.
+ Does a lot - CD printing, scanning to JPEG/PDF, scanning printing, etc.
+ Double-sided printing
+ Does match, IMO, lab photo prints for all intents and purposes - resolution, fine text & details, etc.
+ Does handle 2GB memory cards with 700+ photos. Not too slow at scrolling through the photos, though not fast ala PC. (none of the photo printers out there scroll fast through 700+ photos).
+ Far cheaper than any other similar AIO photo printers that have as good photo print quality (yes, there are cheaper AIO’s, but the photo quality isn’t up to par, esp. under magnification.)
+ Decent print speed under Best settings. Against the more expensive HP (that $300 model with touchscreen), and Canon MP610, it was fast in comparison. Never as fast as a Noritsu, but won’t leave you sitting around too long.
+ still has Epson’s nice 1-year warranty - problem? it gets replaced if it can’t be resolved over the phone.

I’ve printed the same image off my DSC-T9 from the RX680, RX500, Picturemate Deluxe and at Walgreens (Noritsu to Fujifilm Crystal Archive). Although they look fine, under magnification, the RX680 is the closest follwed by the Picturemate. The 1.5pl dot size is really good, and although you can just tell it’s made by an inkjet under magnification, it’s definitely not noticable if you have nothing to compare against viewed straight. Very smooth gray/light color gradients due to the variable 5-dot size ink dropplets, a jump ahead of the RX500 era for sure (which is noticably rougher under magnification), and better color gamut vs. the pigmented Picturemate inks.
The fact that the magnified differences vs. a real photo print were minor allowed picky me to pull the gun on this one right away. (ie. you aren’t going to notice any problems w/o magnification)
wilhelm-imaging.com has it at 17 years under open display prior to noticable color shifting, so essentially a lifetime in an album. Much better than the Epson 870 of many years ago where there was noticable orange fading after a few weeks/months as reported by many (obsolete printer). Although not truely ‘waterproof’ ala dunkable pigmented Epson prints (eg Picturemate Deluxe, not the newer Dash series, and other top-end models), very similar to the Fujifilm Crystal Archive print for how well it handles.
The latest Epson 1.5pl Advanced MSDT series 6-color Claria printers are very nice and recommended as photo printers that’ll match Fujifilm Crystal Archive prints from a digital Noritsu for all intents and purposes - resolution, print quality, and color gamut-wise. (The Canon 1pl models with 5+ colors do well resolution-wise, but they do introduce a noticable warm color shift across the board - thus, at first, looks richer, but the prints will have a warm cast across concrete and other items that should be neutral - this is from straight digital memory card prints, not PC color corrected, to the MP610.)
